I had a phase a couple months ago, where I was obsessed with acai bowls. Especially the ones with nutella. I mean, I was obsessed!! I would crave em a couple times a week. And with a hefty price tag of $11 per bowl, that quickly started to add up.

Lucky for me, while shopping through the aisles at Trader Joe’s, I came across their frozen acai packs. Best part: the packs are completely frozen with no added sugars! And so I began to experiment, tried to get it as close to those $11 bowls I was obsessed with.

I just may have landed on an even better version of that $11 bowl because this one is hand made with love and costs a lot less.

Feel free to experiment with the liquid base. I prefer to use a fruit juice base for that added tang. I decided to try this recipe out with kombucha and I must say … I dig it! It adds the perfect fruit tang to the acai that I crave.

Also, I have to note if you use one of those high tech blenders you will get that perfect smoothie bowl consistency. I do not have one of those drool worthy high tech blenders, so sometimes getting that consistency and texture is somewhat a challenge. But be sure to read the notes on some tips to get that perfect smoothie bowl texture!

Acai Bowl w/ Kombucha

Cook Time 10 minutes
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 frozen acai packet I used Trader Joe's brand
  • 5 whole strawberries frozen or about 1/4 cup sliced strawberries (frozen)
  • 1 tbsp agave or honey
  • 1/4 cup Kombucha
  • 1-2 tsps of water depending on consistency preferred see directions

Optional toppings for garnish:

  • granola
  • blueberries
  • drizzle of honey on top

Instructions

  1. Place all fruit ingredients into a blender and agave. Next add in half of the Kombucha and blend. Depending on the consistency of your mixture: if it is still too thick add in rest of Kombucha, if it is the perfect consistency do not add the rest of the Kombucha in. **Note: the texture and consistency will depend on how cold your ingredients are. Thaw frozen ingredients for about 10-15 mins and then blend while still cold. This will give you that thick and smooth texture. If your mixture is more on the liquid side add in more frozen fruit. If your mixture is too thick, add in a tsp of water.**
