There is no “we” in chocolate.
But lucky for you, this recipe was made for sharing, if you wish 🙂
What is about cold weather and a cup of hot chocolate?? Or better yet, what is it about the holidays and hot chocolate? Well, there’s my thought process … cold weather >> holidays >> hot chocolate. So it’s easy to see, why and how this recipe came about. I was craving a cup of hot chocolate!
The bold flavor of the cocoa powder combined with the semi sweet chocolate chips is outta this world! Oh and whisk in some heavy cream and you have one rich hot chocolate. This is a cup to savor. A cup to sit down, treat yo self and enjoy every smooth, luscious sip of it.
Also, may I add, this is QUICK, QUICK, QUICK! Perfect for a cold winter day or feel free to make this in a crockpot and take to your holiday parties! Toss in some marshmallows on top & some holiday sprinkles. No one will know you spent less than 10 minutes on this!
Cause, Baby its cold outside 🙂
Red Velvet Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 3 cups milk I used 2%
- 2 cups heavy cream 1 pint
- 2 tbsps premium quality cocoa powder I used Trader Joe’s brand, quite good!!
- 1/3 cup + 2 tbsps premium quality semi sweet chocolate chips I used Ghirardelli
- 2 tsps sugar
- 2 tsps pure vanilla extract
- 4-5 drops of red food coloring
Instructions
-
In a medium saucepan, combine milk and heavy cream and bring to a boil.
-
Add in cocoa powder, chocolate chips and sugar. Continue to whisk until smooth. Next add in vanilla extract and mix. Lastly, add in red food coloring and stir to incorporate. Let simmer for ~1-2 minutes.
-
Pour into mugs & serve with marshmallows & whipped cream!
Recipe Notes
- Be sure to use good quality chocolate chips & cocoa powder. It will add to the richness of the hot chocolate!
- Be sure to taste and add in more sugar as desired. I have the measurements as a guide. I preferred a little bit more chocolate chips, which is why you see 1/4 cup + 2 tbsps (LOL)
- As the hot chocolate comes to a boil, it will start to develop a film on top, just continue to whisk and bring the heat down a bit.
